Don Lydell Montgomery, 58, of Louisville died December 26, 2022 at Baptist Health.

Visitation 10-11 Saturday, December 31, 2022 at Community Missionary Baptist Church 4909 E. Indian Trail. Funeral to follow at 11. Burial Calvary Cemetery.

Don Lydell Montgomery was born on Sunday, March 22, 1964 in Louisville, Kentucky. He was the second child born to Johnny Montgomery and Elizabeth Posey Montgomery.

Educated in the Jefferson County Public School system, Don attended Newburg Elementary School, Myers Middle School and graduated from Seneca High School. When in high school, his choice of sports was football, which naturally, he chose to become a player on the football team. Later, he became a Dallas Cowboy #1 Fan.

Don’s Christian journey began at Community Missionary Baptist Church when he gave his life to Christ, and was baptized by Pastor William T. Shumake. In his younger days, he sang in the Sunbeams Choir at church. He remained a member of Community Baptist Church until his homegoing. Don was housebound for the last 10 years of his life, and was very appreciative for the calls and cards he received that encouraged him to fight on and never give up.

Don’s first experience with working, began when he became a teenager, and was employed at Darryl’s Restaurant on Bardstown Road. He followed in the footsteps of his father and uncles, and was further employed, pouring concrete, for Cosby Construction Company. His father and uncles were classified as the best construction crew in Newburg. When he decided on securing a permanent job, he became a custodian for Jefferson County Public Schools. Thomas Jefferson Middle School was the last school Don worked as a custodian. After retirement, he relaxed and enjoyed fishing with his father.

Don’s greatest hobbies were his keen interest in motorcycles and classic cars. Dancing, enjoying being around family and friends, being a fact keeper and sharing his current event nuggets with anyone who stopped by, filled a lot of void in his day. In the summer, he thought he was a grill master, and just happened to be a pretty good cook. He knew how to select the best cuts of meats to fulfill his healthy appetite.

Although Don could sometimes be a little stubborn, deep down, he was as sweet and as gentle as a teddy bear. He was always willing to share, especially with his nephews and nieces, who held a special place in his heart.

On Monday, December 26, 2022, Don Lydell Montgomery departed this life. He leaves to cherish his memories his father, Johnny Montgomery; sister, Vernecia “Nan” Montgomery Bush (Robert); nephew, Reginald, and his daughters, La’Ryah, A’Kya, and A’Rosa Bush; nephew, Derrick, and his daughter, Harmoni, and son, Dakarai Bush; three bonus nephews and three bonus nieces; Aunt Shirley Betts of Louisville, KY; uncles, Grandville, Fletcher, Daniel Posey of Louisville, KY; Aunt Flossie Pearson of Oxford, AL; Uncle Carlton Posey of Anniston, AL; and a host of cousins, and friends. A special thanks is extended to Don’s dedicated caregivers, Sherri Williams; and cousin, Don Lyons.
