In Loving Memory of Albert Harris Shumake II

Albert Harris Shumake II transitioned peacefully at his home on December 7, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, intelligence, and deep connections.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 12, 2024, at Community Missionary Baptist Church, with visitation from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, followed by the service. W.T. Shumake and Daughters Funeral Home is honored to oversee the arrangements.

Born in Louisville, Kentucky, he was the eldest son of the late Abner Vernon Shumake and Mary Fenta Boddie. Albert’s life was a tapestry of resilience, compassion, and unwavering devotion to his family.

Baptized at an early age at Stoner Memorial AME Zion Church, Albert’s spiritual foundation was laid in the comforting presence of his mother, who sang in the choir, and his grandmother. These early moments of faith and family nurtured his kind and protective spirit. After losing his mother at a tender age, Albert became a pillar for his younger siblings, always looking out for them with love and care.

Albert’s intellectual curiosity was evident from a young age. He graduated from Central High School in Louisville, where he excelled academically and socially. He pursued higher education at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, where his vibrant personality and sharp mind flourished. Though his studies were interrupted when he chose to serve his country in the U.S. Army, Albert’s love for learning remained a lifelong passion.

Albert was a bright, intelligent man who loved to read and engage in profound conversations about the world and its many mysteries. His love for children was unparalleled, and he took immense pride in the accomplishments of his own children and grandchildren.
Albert married Bobbie Miller, and together they had two children, Albert Harris Shumake IV and Brandy Louise Shumake. He also lovingly raised a stepson, Dante Miller. Later in life, he was overjoyed to discover and welcome his daughter, Darnelle Johnson-Weatherspoon, into his life.

Albert’s greatest joy was his family. He leaves to cherish his memory his children: Darnelle Johnson-Weatherspoon, Albert H. Shumake lV, and Brandy Louise Shumake; and his beloved grandchildren: Briana Nychole, Alexis Sharee, Jeffrey II (Weatherspoon), and Ella Louise Shumake, who was truly the apple of his eye.

He is also survived by his siblings: Mildred Jean Bristow of Atlanta, GA; Jocelyn Carol Dave (George), who lovingly cared for him in his final days; Rev. Erich V. Shumake (Connie); Lynn Watson; and Michael V. Shumake (Marilyn), all of Louisville, KY. Albert also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family who will forever remember his warmth and wisdom.

Albert’s life journey took him from Louisville to Atlanta and back, where he created lasting friendships and connections. He was a man of great intellect.

Albert’s memory will forever live on in the hearts of his family and friends. His love, strength, and wisdom were gifts to all who knew him. Rest in peace, Albert—you were deeply loved and will be sorely missed.
