Obituary

Is it any wonder that Cora Beatrice Covington was so special since she shared a birthdate with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ? Born on December 25, 1951, her mother, Eva Louise Green, was thrilled to welcome her third child, and first girl, into the family. Her father, Louis Covington, also shared in the joy as the family grew to eventually include three brothers and five sisters.

Growing up in the Newburg area, Cora was educated in the Jefferson County Public Schools System where she became a Seneca High School graduate. Her Christian journey began at the College of the Scriptures under the leadership of Rev. Cornelius Daniels. Later, she joined Forest Tabernacle Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. James Anderson.

Her working career consisted of working as a certified nurses’ aide for numerous nursing homes. In her spare time, Cora enjoyed so many things and activities. Some of her favorites were thrift store shopping, turning leftover food into something brand new, reading, watching scary movies, listening to rhythm and blues music, DIY (do-it-yourself) decorating with a can of spray paint to make all sorts of creative designs on her walls, and using her green thumb to keep plants thriving. She especially enjoyed the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season.

She was a woman who spoke her mind and often gave unsolicited pearls of wisdom meant to help others along their way. Cora was one that you could count on to tell you the truth.

Cora was a woman who appreciated fashion, and it was obvious since she wore stylish, age-appropriate clothing and received compliments often. Sadly, Cora’s life on this earth came to an end on Tuesday, December 26, 2023, one day after her 72nd birthday.

She was preceded in death by parents. Eva Green McElroy and Louis Covington, and brother, Ronnie Green. Left behind to cherish their memories of her are daughter, Jacqueline McRae; four grandchildren, Shawn Green, Joe McRae, Jr., Monte McRae, and Tamera McRae; nine great grandchildren; seven siblings, Wayne Wilson, Linda Green, Paula McElroy, Dale McElroy, Wanda McElroy, Carl McElroy, and Sheila McElroy and a host of extended family and friends.
