David Alexander Buckner was born Thursday, January 27, 1944, to Willie Roberta Smith Buckner and Sterley Buckner, Sr. in Louisville, Kentucky. He was one of their 11 children born in this loving large family.
Educated in the Jefferson County Public Schools, David attended James Bond Elementary School, now renamed Dann C. Byck Elementary. He went on to attend Western Junior High School, where he was active and played on the football team. In 1962, David was a proud graduate of Seneca High School.
After high school, David pursued joining the military but was initially declined due to a heart murmur. However, a short time later, "Uncle Sam" drafted him to become a part of the United States Army and enlisted on December 11, 1967. He served his country well and received an honorable discharge, thanking him for his service.
Returning to Louisville, David was gainfully employed by Fawcett Dearing Printing Company, which printed magazines and pocket size booklets. When Ford Motor Company expanded to Louisville, David chose to change jobs, and remained with Ford Motor Company until his retirement in 2001. While employed at Ford, he played on their basketball team. He also served on the Civil Rights Committee at Ford Motor Company.
As a child, David's Christian journey began at an early age. It was always important to him to show God's love in everything he did. Whether he was a volunteer delivering commodities for Dare to Care to various sites in Louisville, or financially supporting numerous charitable causes, David did not want to receive any recognition for what he did. He was a giver, philanthropist, and believed "You can't beat God's giving."
He served as a Deacon at Embracing Truth Ministries and a member of the Trustee Board at the College of the Scriptures Church.
David, a man of strong convictions, was also an encourager, supporter, and made time to show up in the lives of his family. He was highly respected by his family, who would listen to him as he shared little nuggets of wisdom and advice. He always had an ear for listening to whatever was spoken to him. One of his greatest joys was being surrounded by his family.
In his spare time, David enjoyed following the U of L Cardinals and the Baltimore Ravens. You could count on David being at the dinner table whenever dirty rice, brown beans and cornbread were served. For fifty plus years, he had the greatest cook in the world, his beloved wife, Joyce Marie Strickland Buckner, who loved to cook and David enjoyed her cooking. It was a match made in Heaven. However, Joyce transitioned from this world on January 23, 2022.
Sadly, and with heavy hearts, David Alexander Buckner, departed this life on Tuesday, March 3, 2026. He leaves to cherish his memories, his only son, Marcus Strickland (Janice), three grandchildren; two great grandchildren; siblings, Barbara Buckner King, Pearl Gillispie Gray and Mary Buckner; and a host of extended family and friends.
David was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Marie Buckner; parents Willie Roberta and Sterley Buckner; siblings, Eugene Smith, Sterley Buckner, Jr., Leonard Buckner, Richard Buckner, Mattie Buckner Hart, and Georgia Buckner Eugene.
