Doris Elizabeth Howard, 99, of Louisville transitioned to her heavenly home on Saturday, August 19, 2023.
Visitation 11-12 Saturday, September 2, 2023 at W.T. Shumake & Daughters Funeral Home 3815 Newburg Road. Memorial service to follow at 12 noon.
Doris Elizabeth Howard was born on June 3, 1924 in Cincinnati, Ohio to proud parents Samuel and Hazel Willis. She was the youngest of four children; Samuel, Cecil and Ethel Mae.
Cincinnati, Ohio was Doris’ home until she was 16 years old, at which time she and her family relocated to Louisville, Kentucky. She attended public schools in her early years, but later continued her education, and proudly earned her GED.
Doris was a family person who was loved by many and loved everyone in return. She was known to be a loving and giving person, always willing to help someone in any way that she could assist. She enjoyed seeing a smile on a person’s face when joy was brought to them. Doris lit up the room with her pleasant personality.
Kelvin and Darin, Doris’ two sons, enjoyed the “fruit of their mother’s labor”, because she worked many jobs to meet their needs and provide for them. She was employed at CSX Railroad as a Shop Attendant until retirement. But retirement did not last long, because she entered the work force again as an employee at Jefferson County Public Schools in the Nutrition Department, providing healthy lunches for the students. Doris again, worked at JCPS until retirement.
Even though Doris was employed at many jobs, she didn’t neglect giving of her time to the Lord. She served on the Senior Usher Board at Greater Salem Baptist Church, and was active in her church in any capacity she was needed. She however, did find leisure time to enjoy life. She played Bingo, bowled, played cards, tried her luck at the Boat, took delight in cooking up some soul food, and loved to watch U of L Basketball on TV. She was an avid U of L fan. Go Cards!!
Sadly on Saturday, August 19, 2023, Doris Elizabeth Howard, departed her earthly home. She leaves to cherish her memory, two sons, Kelvin Duane Howard and Darin Gerod Howard; 6 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
