George Lewis Thomas, 85, transitioned on Sunday, June 29, 2025.
Memorial Service 1 pm Saturday, July 5, 2025 at W.T. Shumake & Daughters Funeral Home 3815 Newburg Road. Burial 9:30 am Wednesday, July 9, 2025 at Kentucky Veteran Cemetery, Radcliff, Kentucky.
George Lewis Thomas was born on July 13, 1939, in Paris, Kentucky, to Anna Alene Avery. A proud graduate of Louisville Central High School, George joined the United States Army Airborne at age 20. He served honorably as a paratrooper and was a veteran of World War II.
After completing his military service, George married the love of his life, the late Rosetta Trice. From their sacred union came one beloved daughter, Elizabeth Ann.
He worked for 13 years at Philip Morris Tobacco Company before its relocation to Atlanta. After retirement, he occasionally helped his close friend Frank at Jay’s Cafeteria.
Later, George devoted himself fully to God's purpose. He gave his life to Christ at an early age and was a faithful member of Newburg Church of Christ. Known for his wisdom, laughter, and spiritual leadership, he was a guiding presence in the lives of many.
George Lewis Thomas transitioned peacefully on Sunday, June 29, 2025. His legacy continues through those who knew and loved him. He is survived by his daughter:, Elizabeth Ann Akinyemiju (Ebenezer) ; son: Andrew Bland; brothers: John Avery and Nathan Avery; grandchildren: William Thomas (Keisha), NaTosha Warner (Tosha), Charles E. Gowdy III (Kimberli Thomas); 7 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
