Gregory Jerome Anderson, affectionately known as “Greg,” was born on September 29, 1961, in Louisville, Kentucky. He was the firstborn son of the late Betty Jo King and Robert Shelby. Though born to them, Greg was lovingly raised and embraced as a son by Oliver “O.T.” King, whom he proudly and affectionately called “Daddy.”
As a young child, Gregory gave his life to Christ through baptism. He and his family were active members of Mount Moriah Baptist Church. Over the years, he continued his faith journey by joining Forest Tabernacle Baptist Church, and in recent years, he often worshipped at Bates Memorial and Burnett Avenue Baptist Church. Despite enduring physical pain and life’s uncertainties, Greg remained steadfast in his faith, attending Sunday services with the help of devoted friends, always seeking strength in the Word of God.
Gregory was educated through the Louisville public school system and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School. He went on to become a successful entrepreneur, founding and operating a reputable lawn care business. More than just work, this venture became a platform for him to build lasting relationships, his clients often considered him family, a testament to his character and work ethic.
Among Greg’s greatest joys in life was becoming a father to his only son, Troy Coatley. He found deep purpose in fatherhood and cherished every moment shared with Troy, from early memories to the very last days of his life.
Greg grew up in the close-knit community of Newburg, where he was known and loved by many. His calm presence, impeccable style, generous spirit, and radiant smile made him unforgettable. Whether spending time with lifelong friends or new ones made along his journey, Greg always offered a kind word or uplifting message, leaving everyone he met better than he found them. His legacy is one of love, respect, and unwavering kindness.
On June 19, 2025, Gregory passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family and friends. A devoted husband, father, son, brother, and friend, he leaves behind a legacy of compassion and faith.
Gregory is survived by his wife, Lisa Anderson; his treasured son, Troy Coatley; his “Daddy,” Oliver King; and his cherished grandchildren: Troy Jr., Endya, Amari, and My’ah. He is also survived by his siblings: Bronda, Senethia, Wayne, Eric, Lisa, Lyn, and Angela; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and extended family from the Shelby, Maddox, and King families. Through his enduring faith, Gregory was welcomed into eternal rest by his loving mother, Betty King, and father, Robert Shelby.
Gregory Jerome Anderson will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever loved.
