Mabel Evelyn Moran Mansfield was born on September 23, 1932, in Anchorage, Kentucky, to parents Bessie Kate Stallard Moran and Robert Clifton Moran. She was the third of their eight children and was given the nickname “Skippi”. She became a baptized believer in Jesus Christ at an early age and was baptized at Jeffersontown First Baptist; however, when the family moved into the Newburg area, Mabel united with Forest Baptist Church. Her favorite part of church was Sunday school because she learned about Jesus and other people in the Bible.
Her adolescent and adult years were busy, active ones. She attended Jeffersontown Colored School and also worked for several private families doing domestic work but was eventually hired on at the J A Sexaver Company where she worked until she retired. Skippi met and married the love of her life, George Mansfield, and their love story lasted a lifetime. They had so much fun together. Mabel and George would travel to New Orleans and Florida regularly. She was always documenting everything by taking pictures and keeping clippings about anything the family printed. Her other hobby included coloring pictures in adult coloring books.
Skippi showed her love for others in so many ways. She was the caregiver for her aunt and uncle when they could no longer care for themselves. Although she and her husband didn’t have any biological children, she raised six to eight children to adulthood and treated them as if they were their own and would speak of Mary (Bob), Jeanne (Walt), Rick, Tim, Debbie (Craig), and Steve (V.V.) as if she gave birth them. They always remained an intricate part of her family.
She loved to cook and did an excellent job with it, which was especially true when it came to her roast beef. It was so tender a knife wasn’t needed to cut into it. Skippi also loved her family and spending time with them. Whenever she could, listening to gospel music brought joy to her heart and mind.
Sadly, on Tuesday, May 24, 2022, all of the good that Mabel Evelyn Moran Mansfield shared came to an end. She leaves to cherish her memories, sisters, Jennie Lee Wells and Mary Bridgewaters; sister-in-law, Garnetta Moran; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, siblings Mattie Kate Simpson, Robert Moran, Bernice Grundy, Pauline White, and Theodore Moran. Mabel Evelyn Moran Mansfield will be greatly missed!
