Michael Vernon Shumake, Sr., 68, of Louisville, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 2, 2026.
Visitation 2-4 Sunday, July 12, 2026, at Taylortown AME Zion Church 10901 Ballardsville Road. Funeral to follow at 4pm.
Born on April 20, 1958, in Louisville, Kentucky, Michael Vernon Shumake, Sr., was the son of the late Abner Shumake and Mildred Shumake. He graduated from Jefferson County Brown School in 1976 and continued his education at the University of Louisville.
Michael’s faith journey began as a young child at Spillman Memorial Church. Through his young adult and adult years, he worshiped at First Congregational Church and later joined Taylortown AME Zion Church.
Michael spent several years working in the hospitality industry in West Palm Beach, Florida, where he was known for his warm personality and dedication to serving others. In later years, he became self-employed as an insurance agent, building lasting relationships with clients through his integrity, professionalism, and genuine care for people.
Above all, Michael treasured his family. He was the proud father of Michael Shumake Jr. and Charlette Washington. He will be remembered for his kindness, sense of humor, generous spirit, and the love he shared with those fortunate enough to know him.
On Thursday, July 2, 2026, Michael V. Shumake Sr., at the age of 68, transitioned peacefully from this life. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Marilyn Shumake; his mother, Mildred Shumake; his brothers, Rev. Erich Shumake (Connie) and Tim Frierson (April); his sisters, Mildred Bristow, Jocelyn Dave (George), and Lynn Watson; his son, Michael Shumake Jr. (Lateria); his daughter, Charlette Washington; nine grandchildren, Michael Shumake III, Michaela Shumake, Mason Shumake, Madison Shumake, Dujuan Robinson, Aaliyah Baker, Bioncca Hale, Moriah Carter, and Olivia Carter; one great-grandchild, Raiyanna Joseph; his special cousin, Sherryll S. Summes; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Michael’s life touched many people, and his memory will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
