Modell graduated from Louisville Central High School, Class of 1941, and attended Simmons Seminary. He served with the US Navy as an Oiler and Gunner’s Mate, during World War II.

After the war he married his childhood-sweetheart Lena Mae Sanders. They were married for 58 years. They had two sons, Theron and Eric.

Model was a proud member of the Community Missionary Baptist Church, and felt honored to serve on the Deacon board.

Modell was employed by the L&N railroad as a Pullman Porter, In 1958 he was laid off as many were when the passenger rail system in this country took a downturn. As he had just purchased his first new home in New Broadmore he needed a source of income. He found employment with the Louisville Housing Authority as a janitor and by the time he retired after 30 years, due to his hard work and consistent excellence, he had risen to the position of head HVAC engineer. During all those lean years he held down a second night job at Kaelin’s restaurant for over 20 years as a waiter to support the family to which he was devoted. He worked another 12 years as a dispatcher for the city.

After the passing of his wife Lena he later married Peggy King, with whom he shared the remainder of his life.

There were three things Modell cherished most in life working hard and delighting in it, loving and providing for his family no matter what it took, and above all being a good and faithful Servant to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Lena, his son Eric (Elizabeth) Cyrus, sister Eddy Ruth Seagraves (A), brother Paul Cyrus, Sr., Frank Cyrus, Joe Cyrus, Moses H. Gant, Jr., James Gant., granddaughter Shawana (Brian).
