Raymond Smith was born on Tuesday, December 1, 1953, in Louisville, Kentucky, and was one of nine children born to the late Emma Smith and Larkin Smith, Sr. He attended Seneca High School and later became an employee as a bus driver for his school district, Jefferson County Public Schools. Being an employee with JCPS did not stop him from also joining in ownership with his brother Eddie Smith and becoming part owner of Shelly's Trucking Company. One business was not enough for him because he also owned Ready Ray’s Dump Truck and Asphalt. Raymond was a man with many talents, and If he didn’t know how to do something, you’d best believe he knew somebody who did know how to do it. He was a well-known, respected man in the Newburg neighborhood. There was not a day that went by that he didn’t have a driveway full of cars and people.
He enjoyed gambling and working on cars. He joked a lot, and everybody would be referred to as “man”. If he started the conversation with “maannnn”, then you knew he had something to say. When Sundays rolled around, Raymond made sure he didn’t miss Sunday dinners, and he had cabinets full of Tupperware to prove it. Raymond had such a genuine and forgiving heart. If someone owed him some money, it was forgiven as long as the dues were paid.
Sadly, Raymond Smith departed this life on Wednesday, June 1, 2022. He was preceded in death by his mother, father, daughter Ramika Smith; and siblings, Larkin Smith, Jr., Eddie Smith, James Smith, Mary “Sister” Green, and Richard Smith. To cherish his memories, he leaves behind: his daughter, Raechelle Smith; granddaughter, Latrice Smith-Foster; great-granddaughters, Sha’Riya Calloway and J’aunna Riggsbee;life long friend, Marsha Duncan; two sisters, Loretta Smith and Millie Smith-Sherrell; one brother, Robert Smith (Sheila McElroy); stepson, Tyrone Davis; and a host of family and friends.
