.Rita Mae Sutton Witherspoon was born Wednesday, April 12, 1939, in Lewisburg, Kentucky, to Charles and Evetta Beason Sutton. She was educated in the former Louisville Public School System (Central High) and St. Helena’s Business College. Rita accepted Christ as her Savior at the age of twelve at First Virginia Avenue Baptist Church. Rita married Joseph Hendrix Witherspoon in September 1970. From this union, two children were born, Robin Lynette and Joseph Hendrix, Jr.

Throughout her life, she lived it quietly and was a great example of strength and courage both physically and spiritually. Her living testimony was always about her dependence on her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, to get her through the good and trying times that came into her life. Later in life, that same testimony was still being declared when she became a member of Green Castle Baptist Church where she faithfully served and depended on Jesus for the remainder of her years.

In her spare time, Rita had some favorite things that she did. Rita found entertainment by watching television. She especially enjoyed watching the tennis matches, the soap opera “The Young and the Restless”, and the Louisville Cardinals’ basketball games. She was an avid follower of the cards. Often, she could be heard cheering AND coaching them right in front of her TV. Taking pictures was another favorite of hers. She always had her camera ready for a snapshot. One of her proudest moments was her children being born and especially her granddaughter, Zoe, and, all accepted Christ as their Savior. Another proud moment was when Barack Obama became the President of the United States of America. Rita displayed his photos, along with his family, around her home in such a way that it seemed as if they were “for real” family members.

Rita Mae Sutton Witherspoon departed this life on Monday, July 5, 2021. She is survived by her children Robin and Joseph Jr.; granddaughter, Zoe; her sister, Carrol; nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who miss her deeply but know that one day we will all be together again---absent from the body present with the Lord.
