Retired United States Army Sergeant Samuel "Sam" Humphery, born on September 28, 1926, in Norco, Louisiana, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2025, in Louisville, Kentucky.
Visitation 11-12 Friday, January 31, 2025 at Community Missionary Baptist Church 4909 E. Indian Trail. Funeral to follow at 12 noon. Burial Evergreen Cemetery.
Sam was the beloved husband of Mary Humphery, whom he married in 1948. Together, they raised four children: Helen Powell (deceased), Vicky Sickles, Hilton Humphery, and Della Humphery. He was also a cherished grandfather to a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Sam's extended family included his siblings James, Jack, Charles, Raymond, Loretta, Joyce, and Hilda, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A dedicated serviceman and true patriot, Sam enlisted in the Army in February 1945. He served his country with honors in three wars: World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. His distinguished military career extended for a span of 24 years until he was Honorably Discharged on February 28, 1970. Among his many accolades were the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the prestigious Congressional Medal of Honor.
Sam had an interest in painting and attended school for exterior & interior painting. After retiring from the Army, he became a Professional Painter and worked for 25 years in this career. In 1959, Sam settled in Louisville, KY and became an integral part of the community, specifically for young men by offering them mentorship and work opportunities. For over 55 years, he was a devoted member of Community Baptist Church. His faith and commitment to service were guiding principles throughout his life.
Sam will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family and country. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
